christien meindertsma is a designer intent upon raising consumer awareness about the raw materials that go into our products.  in the index of her book pig 05049 she writes, “in taking good care of the earth, basically, the first step is knowing where our things come from.”  meindertsma limits the scale of her products based on the volume of the original material instead of changing the original material in order to fit an unreal goal.  in other words, the final product available to the consumer fits the original product provided by the animal.

one cardigan is made with the wool of one sheep.  the aran rug is eighteen sheep long.  and every product comes with the id number of the sheep that donated the wool, just so you never forget that you really did take your wool garment off someone else’s back: the sheep’s.
